Joe’s Holiday Gift Message – 2007
Do you ever receive Holiday cards that say, “Instead of sending you some delicious smoked salmon or a box of fruit each month, we have made a contribution to ______ in your name”? It always leaves me with more questions than answers. Who gets the tax deduction? Who gets credit toward admission to heaven? Why does it have to be an either/or deal? Shouldn’t the beneficiary, get to pick the present or the donation? What if you don’t support the particular cause? (Perhaps Albanian whale habitats are not your issue of choice?)
I want to remind you that the real joy in charitable giving is actually giving something of value for the benefit of others? I don’t want to take that away from you. So, I am giving some of my money away in my own name without even thinking about you for a moment? I urge you to do the same. If you can’t think of a charity, you might consider Teens In Public Service. You can make a donation online (www.TeensInPublicService.org) and no need to mention my name.
Alternatively, if you would rather have me act as steward for your charity at no charge (a la Warren to Bill & Melinda) send a check to SOS Foundation, a Charitable Private Foundation c/o my office.
